On June 25th, Immanuel Congregational church (10 Woodland Street, Hartford) will be celebrating Pride in a special service. Billed as “Drag Me to Church,” all are welcome.
Immanuel has been officially “open and affirming” to the Lesbian/Gay/Bi community since the year 2000. In 2012 we expanded that declaration to include the trans and queer community. Of our weekly active attendees of about 130 – 150 people about 30 of those people are LGBTQ+. We are known as the “church with the rainbow sidewalk.” If you drive by you will see our rainbow sidewalk from Farmington Avenue to our front door. This year we have made a very conscious decision to reach out to the LGBTQ+ community, many of whom have been disenfranchised from the churches they have grew up in. It is amazing how folks who have been “churched” will reach a point in their lives where they miss that spiritual part of their lives but don’t think there is anything out there for them.
Immanuel continues to be a destination for marginalized people and communities seeking a home to celebrate their faith, and what better way to fight the bigotry and ignorance that’s all too prevalent in our culture than through a drag service.
Celebrate, be seen, and rejoice!
